Most driving test failures aren't due to a lack of driving ability — they're due to small, preventable mistakes. Knowing what catches learners out can help you avoid them. Here are the most common reasons people fail their driving test in South Africa.
1. Poor Observation at Intersections
This is the number one reason for failure. The examiner needs to see you checking your mirrors and blind spots at every intersection, before changing lanes, and when pulling away. Exaggerate your head movements slightly so the examiner can clearly see you're checking. A quick glance isn't enough — make it obvious.
2. Rolling Back on Hill Starts
During the incline start in the yard test, even a slight roll-back is an instant fail. Find the bite point of the clutch before releasing the handbrake, and give it a little more gas than you think you need. Practice this until it's second nature.
3. Touching Lines in the Yard
In parallel parking, alley docking, and the three-point turn, touching a line or mounting a kerb means instant failure. Take it slow — you have time. Use your reference points (your instructor will teach you these) and don't rush.
4. Not Signalling Early Enough
You must signal at least 5 seconds before changing direction or pulling away from the kerb. Many learners signal too late or forget to cancel their indicators after a turn. The examiner notices both.
5. Speeding in Residential Areas
Residential areas in Cape Town often have 40 or 60 km/h limits. Going even slightly over is a fail. Pay attention to signs and keep your speed in check, especially in school zones.
6. Stopping Over the Stop Line
At a stop sign, your vehicle must come to a complete stop before the solid white line. Rolling through or stopping over the line is an automatic fail. Stop fully, count to two, then proceed when safe.
7. Nervous Braking
Braking harshly or unnecessarily (like braking when there's no reason to) signals to the examiner that you're not in control. Brake smoothly and progressively, and always check your mirrors before braking.
